International Book Blogger Discussion: ARCS

Right now, with basically only a month of blogging, bookstagramming and being on book twitter, and having 16 followers( who i am so grateful for) , under my sleeve, i doubt publishers are going to send me ARCs of my most anticipated books, when there are so many more well deserving people. However, the problem lies in the fact that getting a physical ARC even when you have maybe 1000-2000 followers, is not very common.

I know, getting an ARC is not the height of success and when you don’t get one it doesn’t mean that you aren’t a good blogger or anything. It’s just that for me, in some way i feel like i belong with these amazing book bloggers that get sent ARCs without even asking. In some way, it makes me feel seen.

I remember the first ARC i received , Damsel by Elana K Arnold, via Edelweiss. This was after about i think 6(?) rejections for The Wicked King, which i finally got to read through a friend. I was so excited. It wasn’t my most anticipated read ( though now one of my favorite reads of the year), but when i got the email saying i had gotten approved, i was over the moon. I wouldn’t shut up about it, for like two hours. At a stretch.

giphy.gif

love this gif! but i really was this excited

After that I got approved for a couple more, that i am really so grateful for. But it still remains that we usually receive e- ARCs and that on Edelweiss mainly. You can just wish for it on NetGalley

I get it, the publishers are being practical. Shipping is not cheap. But, neither is it for us when we buy the books they publish. We also read, review and promote them. People do read our blogs too, and may decide to purchase a book because of a review we have written. In some acknowledgement of this, we wouldn’t mind getting an ARC or a finished copy, every now and then.

I love the book community. I really do. I love how so many bloggers, readers and everyone support each other, and connect with one another, regardless of whether they have met in real life. It’s so refreshing to see when people don’t take into account their gender, religion, sexuality or anything when getting know, love and support one another. I love when US based or Canadian bloggers support other international bloggers, by hosting international giveaways (  thank you for spending on us ) or maybe sending us ARCs or anything, really.

I also have a weird obsession with watching book mail videos on YouTube and Instagram? I am not sure if this is because i like watching people unpack things( yeah, i know, i am weird. But, i really do like it) or because i enjoy just seeing them getting the books and getting excited? I am not sure, but probably both.

Anyways, i don’t hate any of the US based bloggers, who get ARCs. I actually love watching you guys get so excited about your book mail and i love reading your reviews. I also don’t hate the publishers, i just want you guys to give us a chance every once in a while.

These incredible bloggers also wrote a post about this, check them out!

Marie from Drizzle and books: read it

Inside My Library Mind’s post.

Marta on The Cursed Books: read it

P.S: I am going to try and request a physical ARC of Wicked Saints, which i am dying to read. Let’s see how it goes.

Most Anticipated YA Releases of 2019

2018 has been a pretty good year so far for the YA genre. We have had amazing releases from debut authors as well as veterans. So many amazing books that we have read influenced by the world we live in today. Themes such as feminism, rape, sexual assault, mental health and suicide. Books like which we have never read before. Books that are more realistic and that we can relate to our own experience. Here are  some of my favourites so far. However 2019 is looking to be pretty good too. There seem to be so many amazing new releases from debut authors and additions to your favorite series and in some cases the end of  series.

So without further ado, here are some of my most anticipated releases of 2019:

THE WICKED KING by Holly Black

40097144-05F9-429B-8427-23F08E0FC1E5

Release date: January 8, 2019

Pre-Order: AmazonBook Depository,Barnes & Noble

Synopsis: After the jaw-dropping revelation that Oak is the heir to Faerie, Jude must keep her younger brother safe. To do so, she has bound the wicked king, Cardan, to her, and made herself the power behind the throne. Navigating the constantly shifting political alliances of Faerie would be difficult enough if Cardan were easy to control. But he does everything in his power to humiliate and undermine her even as his fascination with her remains undiminished.

When it becomes all too clear that someone close to Jude means to betray her, threatening her own life and the lives of everyone she loves, Jude must uncover the traitor and fight her own complicated feelings for Cardan to maintain control as a mortal in a Faerie world.

IF you haven’t read the Cruel Prince already, your’e missing out on a lot. Off the top of my head?  Bad ass protagonist, sexy love interest, deadly romance, amazing plot and so many secrets. What more could you ask? If you have read the Cruel Prince however, this book is the perfect sequel. Much better actually, more mystery, plot twists, secrets and the romance gets deadlier. AND THAT ENDING!!!.  This book is just so good. Go ahead and pre-order it now. You won’t regret it.

Sneak Peek!

THE GIRL KING by Mimi Yu

download

Release date: January 8th

Pre-order: Amazon,Barnes & Noble,Indigo

Synopsis:

All hail the Girl King.

Sisters Lu and Min have always understood their places as princesses of the Empire. Lu knows she is destined to become the dynasty’s first female ruler, while Min is resigned to a life in her shadow. Then their father declares their male cousin Set the heir instead—a betrayal that sends the sisters down two very different paths.

Determined to reclaim her birthright, Lu goes on the run. She needs an ally—and an army—if she is to succeed. Her quest leads her to Nokhai, the last surviving wolf shapeshifter. Nok wants to keep his identity secret, but finds himself forced into an uneasy alliance with the girl whose family killed everyone he ever loved…

Alone in the volatile court, Min’s hidden power awakens—a forbidden, deadly magic that could secure Set’s reign…or allow Min to claim the throne herself. But there can only be one Emperor, and the sisters’ greatest enemy could turn out to be each other.

I mean come on! All hail the Girl King? A Girl King? Wow. This looks amazing. This is the author’s debut novel and I really hope it is as good as it sounds. I am loving the number of Asian inspired fantasies coming out such as  The Poppy War by R.F Kaung which was also one of my favorites this year. I love politics and  betrayal in fantasy so this seems like a perfect fit.

WE HUNT THE FLAME by Hafsa Faizal

Release date: May 14th

Pre- order: IndieBound,Book Depository ,AmazonBarnes & Noble , Indigo

Synopsis:

People lived because she killed.
People died because he lived.

Zafira is the Hunter, disguising herself as a man when she braves the cursed forest of the Arz to feed her people. Nasir is the Prince of Death, assassinating those foolish enough to defy his autocratic father, the king. If Zafira was exposed as a girl, all of her achievements would be rejected; if Nasir displayed his compassion, his father would punish him in the most brutal of ways.

Both are legends in the kingdom of Arawiya—but neither wants to be.

War is brewing in Arawiya, and the Arz sweeps closer with each passing day, engulfing the land in shadow. When Zafira embarks on a quest to uncover a lost artifact that can restore magic to her suffering world and stop the Arz, Nasir is sent by the king on a similar mission: retrieve the artifact and kill the Hunter. But an ancient evil stirs as their journey unfolds—and the prize they seek may pose a threat greater than either can imagine

A fantasy based in Arabia! I haven’t read one of those in a long time. I really think this series has potential and could be the next Ember in the Ashes. This looks like another amazing debut for the YA genre. I can’t wait!

WICKED SAINTS by Emily A. Duncan

A GOTHIC JOAN OF ARC?!? I am sold. I love dark, political books with magic and from the reviews that i have seen, this seems like one. This is also another debut book and looks like it could be a bestseller.

To find the ancient artifact the Order seeks, Séverin will need help from a band of experts:

An engineer with a debt to pay. A historian who can’t yet go home. A dancer with a sinister past. And a brother in all but blood, who might care too much.

Together, they’ll have to use their wits and knowledge to hunt the artifact through the dark and glittering heart of Paris. What they find might change the world, but only if they can stay alive.

A dark paris with gangs. A gang that reminds me of one of my favorite books ever: Six of Crows ( if you haven’t read that yet, please go do that now). Actually i am getting major Six of Crows vibes from this and that can only mean good things. Definite pre- order.

Kunal has been a soldier since childhood, training morning and night to uphold the power of King Vardaan. His uncle, the general, has ensured that Kunal never strays from the path—even as a part of Kunal longs to join the outside world, which has been growing only more volatile.

Then Esha’s and Kunal’s paths cross—and an unimaginable chain of events unfolds. Both the Viper and the soldier think they’re calling the shots, but they’re not the only players moving the pieces. As the bonds that hold their land in order break down and the sins of the past meet the promise of a new future, both rebel and soldier must make unforgivable choices.

This was one that i really enjoyed reading ( check out my review ). Such a great blend of fantasy, romance and politics. Also it is a pretty good debut and i can’t wait to read the sequel.

Recommended for fans of: The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

THE ASTONISHING COLOR OF AFTER by Emily X.R.Pan

A beautiful book about dealing with loss of a loved one lost through suicide. This book really makes you feel the grief of the protagonist who was trying to understand why her mother killed herself. It makes you understand that some answers can’t really be found and that you aren’t responsible for someone choosing to take their own life. That was their decision.

Recommended for fans of: Contemporary books that make you feel something such as  Please Ignore Vera Dietz by A.S King

SMOKE IN THE SUN by Renee Ahdieh

download (7)

This was a good end to the Flame in the Mist duology. Though i preferred the first one, i enjoyed this one as well.

Recommended for fans of: Fantasy with romance and a kick-ass heroine as well.
